Work Has Requirements.

A position description, list of inherent job requirements or written request helps the doctor understand exactly what needs to be assessed. Without that context, the appointment risks answering the wrong question.

Health Has Context.

A worker may be recovering from an illness. Someone may have returned after time away. A medical condition may have changed. A useful assessment therefore needs context.

The doctor needs to understand both your health and what the work actually requires.

What Is a Fitness-for-Work Assessment?

A fitness-for-work assessment is an occupational medical assessment that considers health information in relation to particular work requirements.

The exact purpose varies. It may involve considering whether there are health factors relevant to safely performing specific duties, whether further review is required, or whether the employer has requested medical information relating to a worker’s current capacity.

When Might an Assessment Be Requested?

There is no single reason. Depending on the circumstances:

Returning after time away from work

Health circumstances have changed

Questions about particular work duties

An employer has requested medical review

Assessment against occupational requirements

Further medical review recommended

Restrictions or adjustments need consideration

Practical Notes

  • Appointment length depends on the purpose and documentation required.
  • Assessments are private, and health information remains sensitive.
  • You are welcome to bring the employer paperwork you have received.
  • This assessment is not a treatment in itself and does not replace your usual care.
  • Please contact reception before booking so the right appointment can be arranged.

Start With the Job, Not Just the Diagnosis

A medical condition by itself does not explain what a job requires. The same health concern may have very different practical implications for different kinds of work.

That is why employer documentation can be so useful. If your employer has given you paperwork, send or bring it.

What Should I Bring?

For an employer-requested occupational assessment, bring as much relevant information as you have.

  • Employer Documentation

Forms, letters or instructions explaining why the assessment has been requested.

  • Position or Duty Information

A position description or information about the duties being assessed, where supplied.

  • Photo Identification

    Bring current identification where required.

  • Medication Information

Know the medications you are currently taking.

  • Relevant Medical Documents

Reports specifically relevant to the work assessment, if not already available to the practice.

  • Glasses or Hearing Aids

Bring these if you normally use them and they may be relevant to the assessment.

How the Appointment Works

Your doctor may begin by reviewing:

  • The employer request
  • The work duties involved
  • Relevant medical history
  • Current symptoms or health concerns
  • Current medications
  • Relevant previous treatment
  • Documentation supplied by you or the employer

    Next Steps

Guidance for planning safe and appropriate work where relevant.

Where appropriate, a clinical examination or further assessment may also be considered. The goal is to gather the information needed to address the occupational-health question being asked.

Possible Outcomes May Include

  • Capacity Review

Consideration of your current ability in relation to relevant work requirements.

  • Restrictions or Adjustments

Where relevant, the assessment may consider whether restrictions or adjustments need to be documented.

  • Further Review

Advice for follow-up or additional information where required.

  • Return-to-Work Considerations

Medical information relevant to resuming work, based on your circumstances.

Outcomes depend on individual circumstances and clinical judgment.

No fixed testing package is advertised. The assessment required depends on the role, employer request and individual circumstances. Please provide the employer documentation before booking so the clinic can confirm whether any specific testing is required and available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Coral Coast Doctors provide fitness-for-work assessments?

Yes. Fitness-for-work assessments are a confirmed part of Coral Coast Doctors' occupational health services.

Why might I need a fitness-for-work assessment?

The reason can vary depending on your health, role and employer requirements. Bring any written request or documentation you have received.

Do I need to contact reception before booking?

Yes. Occupational appointments can require different appointment lengths, documentation and testing, so the clinic asks patients to contact reception first.

What should I bring?

Bring relevant employer paperwork, photo identification, medication information and any other documents related to the assessment.

Will I need physical testing?

Possibly, depending on the purpose of the assessment. Please provide the employer documentation before booking so the clinic can confirm whether any specific testing is required and available.

Will my employer receive a report?

This depends on the assessment and reporting request. Ask reception about the consent, privacy and reporting process that applies to your appointment.

Can the doctor recommend work restrictions?

Restrictions or recommendations may be relevant in some assessments. Your doctor will discuss the relevant assessment and documentation process based on the information requested.

Is a fitness-for-work assessment the same as a WorkCover appointment?

Not necessarily. WorkCover consultations relate specifically to workplace injury and claim processes, while fitness-for-work assessment is broader occupational-health intent.

How long does the assessment take?

Appointment length depends on the purpose and documentation required. Reception can confirm the appropriate booking.

Is it bulk billed?

Occupational medicals may fall outside Medicare and may attract a private fee. Confirm the cost before booking.

It Is Not Just About “Passing” a Medical

People can understandably feel nervous before a workplace assessment. The appointment should not be framed like an exam where the doctor is waiting for you to fail. The purpose is to review relevant medical information in the context of the work question that has been asked.

Be open about:

  • Your medical history
  • Current symptoms
  • Medications
  • Previous injuries where relevant
  • Any changes affecting your ability to perform work

Returning to Work After Illness or Injury

Going back to work can raise practical questions. Can you return to all your usual duties? Is further medical review needed? Does your health need to be considered in relation to particular tasks?

A fitness-for-work assessment may sometimes form part of that process. However, where the issue relates to an active workplace injury or WorkCover claim, the dedicated WorkCover pathway may be more appropriate.

Restrictions, Reporting & Privacy

Where restrictions or recommendations need to be addressed, your doctor will discuss the relevant assessment and documentation process based on the information requested.

A workplace-health assessment involves a specific occupational question. That does not mean every piece of information in your general medical history automatically becomes an employer document. Health information remains sensitive.

If you have questions about what information will be provided after your assessment, ask before the report is completed. If documentation or a report is required, ask reception about the expected process and timeframe when booking.

For Employers: Give Us the Question You Need Answered

Rather than sending an employee with “Please check if they’re okay to work”, provide information such as:

  • The role
  • Relevant work duties
  • Reason for assessment
  • Forms to complete
  • Information required
  • Any relevant workplace requirements

This helps the doctor understand the occupational context and can reduce unnecessary delays caused by missing documentation.
